Senate to Hold Hearing on A-B InBev-SABMiller Deal

Two top senators on an antitrust subcommittee said last week they will hold a hearing on Anheuser-Busch InBev's proposed $104.2 billion takeover of SABMiller.

Sens. Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minnesota) said the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy, and Consumer Rights would examine how the merger would impact competition and consumers in the U.S.


"This hearing will provide an opportunity to publicly examine the impact of the so-called 'beerhemoth' merger on consumers and for the Antitrust Subcommittee to continue its oversight of potentially anti-competitive market consolidation," Lee said in a statement. "Should the deal be finalized, I look forward to a productive and informative discussion."

The Wall Street Journal reports that only the Justice Department has antitrust oversight over the deal in the U.S., but the Senate subcommittee can put executives and beer industry experts on the stand. Read more
