Why Buy Local -- 10 Reasons
  1. Big Box retail is wiping out independent businesses across the country.
  1. As they do, more community members regret the loss of local character.
  1. Absentee landlords emphasize “cheap” products over other community integrity.
  1. Local and state officials are baited with huge promises from Big Box who often land public funds and mega tax rebates – all at a cost to you.
  1. With the promise of huge numbers of jobs that often don’t materialize, other local jobs are displaced.
  1. When Big Box lands in your town, expect to pay more eventually – as you’re paying for more services and infrastructure to support the Box that wipes the others out.
  1. Studies have shown, for example, that 84 percent of Walmart’s sales simply shifted dollars away from other retailers.
  1. Big Boxes generally use a minimum of local goods and services.
  1. A company-owned store responsible to shareholders, like Kroger, Walmart, Marsh and Jewel/Osco, exports its profits to corporate headquarters.
  1. Survival of local businesses depends on local patronage and support.

Local owners, typically having invested much of their life savings in their businesses, have a natural interest in the community's long-term health with local relationships. Community-based businesses are essential to charitable endeavors; their owners frequently serve on local boards and support numerous causes. Yes, some chains give back to towns in which they locate, and not all local businesses are exemplary models. However, the overall impacts are clear: Locally-owned businesses play a key role in our community that chains rarely do. We thank Jeff Milchen, who co-founded the first Independent Business Alliance, for these reminders.
