PatrickTamm_JimMerritt The Indiana Association of Beverage Retailers (IABR) has recognized Sen. Jim Merritt as “Legislator of the Year” for his important and ongoing work on Indiana’s Lifeline Law. Merritt, a Republican senator from Indianapolis, accepted the award at IABR’s February board meeting in Indianapolis. He has been a member of the state Senate since 1990. “Indiana’s Lifeline Law is a critical tool that helps save lives,” said Steve Kohrman, chairman of the association that represents package stores. “As responsible retailers who are strictly regulated by the state, we’ve worked with Sen. Merritt in support of revising and extending the law this year and hope to see it become a national model.” Kohrman, who is a father of seven children, said the association supports many measures that protect the health and welfare of minors. The current Lifeline Law is designed to encourage those who are underage to call 911 for direct help in alcohol-related emergencies. Senate Bill 227, which is supported by IABR, expands that immunity broadly to anyone reporting a medical emergency, a sexual assault or to anyone witnessing what they believe could be a potential crime. “Sen. Merritt has taken his message to colleges across the state of Indiana and we’re working with him now to expand that message to other important audiences,” said Patrick Tamm, CEO of the association. “Sound public policy in Indiana can be a model for others.” Media Contact: Kyle Niederpruem, kyle@kylecommunications.com, 317-509-7334
